  • B.A. Political Science, Carleton College

This course seeks to examine social movements in a comparative perspective. Students in this course will have the chance to critically assess classic academic literature on social movement, revisit prominent scholarly debates, and take a closer look at various empirical cases such as the Arab Spring, anti-abortion movement, and animal rights campaigns.

In particular, this survey course will attempt to address a series of questions, including but not limited to:
- What is the definition of social movement?
- How social movements mobilize their supporters and overcome the “collective action problem”?
- How social movement organizations convey their messages to the general public?
- Why and how social movements differ in their tactical choices?
- How the state responds to social movements?
- Why some social movements are able to induce political changes in repressive, authoritarian regimes?
