This course explores China and Japan in the Age of Discovery. The time frame will begin in the middle of the Ming dynasty for China and the later Sengoku Era for Japan, and will run approximately until the end of the Meiji era. Much of the course will be focused on comparing the different approaches that the two countries took when encountering outside contact and the resulting social changes.
