What is epic poetry? How did people in ancient Greece relate to their many epic traditions? And how did these traditions shape their society?
Students will be introduced to the literary texts such as the Iliad, Theogony, Works and Days, and the Homeric Hymns. While learning to appreciate the literary value of these texts, students also consider various archaeological records and modern scholarship to explore topics such as class, gender, sexuality, body, warfare and violence. The course ends with discussing poetry as in philosophical debates framed around Aristotle and Plato.
