Re-reading Lu Xun: Writing Modernity

Lu Xun is widely considered as the greatest Chinese writer of the past century. Often received as a May Fourth iconoclast, Lu Xun has been canonized as a radical anti-traditionalist that “exposes the ugliness of the Chinese feudal society.” Unfortunately, such reading often glosses over the textual ambiguities, bifurcates the past and the present, and ignores his deep-seated unease in depicting the traditional Chinese cultural subjects. Rather than reducing the ambivalences inherent in his texts to contradictions to be reconciled, this course proposes a symptomatic as opposed to diagnostic re-reading of Lu Xun that dwells at length upon the central problematics Lu Xun poses. We will read his short stories and prose poems alongside theoretical concepts that might help to open up interpretative possibilities. We will wrap up the class with Fei Mu’s 1948 classic film Spring in a Small Townand reflect on general themes like trauma, gender, temporality, revolution, and hope.
